The Dorset Cricket Centre was officially opened by Clive H. Lloyd C.B.E. on 11th March 1994 to provide a much-needed indoor cricket facility. The main purpose of the centre is to provide a facility all year-round for training young cricketers. The centre is large enough for Indoor League games to be played, and can also be divided up into five net lanes. A separate net at the back of the centre runs as a bowling machine net, though it is also possible to use bowling machines in the main hall.
The Jim Welch Memorial Training Room was opened by Derek Shackleton on Friday 16th October 1998.
It is used as a training facility for youngsters as part of District and County Squad sessions. It is also used as a training facility for the various coaching award courses held at the Centre.
The Dorset Cricket Society also has its home in the Training Room, meeting every Thursday afternoon from the last Thursday in September until the Thursday before Good Friday (excluding Christmas and the New Year).

The Jim Welch Memorial Training Room at the centre has been designed to assist coaches with their work by acting as a teaching facility and can be used by local cricketing organisations for meetings. It also contains displays and items focusing on famous cricketers (particularly those with a Dorset connection). It was opened by former Hampshire and England cricketer, Derek Shackleton, on 16th October 1998.
The Development Office and Library was opened by Derek Randall on Saturday 6th April 2002. Keith Brewer, the Dorset Cricket Development Officer is based in this office, which also houses a large collection of cricket books, programmes, handbooks and memorabilia.
The Dorset Cricket Society meets at the Centre on Thursday afternoons at 2.00pm from 25th September 2003 until April 2004. Members listen to a talk, watch and discuss a selected video or join discussion on a variety of cricket topics. From 3.00pm those who wish can participate in an indoor net or non-participants can enjoy informal discussion.
The main use of The Dorset Cricket Centre by adults is undoubtedly club nets. From about January onwards each year, local cricket clubs book some or all of the five main nets in the hall for pre-season practice. Of course, there are also youth cricket coaching courses and net practices for clubs' youth teams, and the centre tends to get more and more packed out as the main cricketing season approaches. For information about net bookings, please see our contacts page.
Adults don't just have to use nets!
